You check email all day?

31/12/2016

You do not get paid to send emails.

You get paid to add value.  Have you added your salary in value to the company yet today?  What is the most important thing you need to do today?

Do this ahead of checking email.

(Tip, to make this easier: Turn off all interruptions, outlook noises, pop-ups, push email on your phone, anything.  So not connect to the server until the time you have scheduled to "do" email)

Why Due Dates Are Not The Answer

30/12/2016

After using todoist for almost a year, it fulfils a great many needs in my day-to-day job.

It has so many versions that task collection is easy for both my corporate job (outlook integration) and the rest of my life's taks (web, iOS, Mac, IFTTT)

But one thing, which plagues many a task manager is the due date.  It has recently had an update which suggests new due dates for overdue tasks.  A nice little feature.  However it struck me that if something is truly due on that date, then I should not be able to move it.  It is either due or it is not.  Certainly, some cheap AI will not know the implications of suggesting a new date that something is due - how does it know how my boss will react or if the rest of the project will delayed as a result.

It then struck me that the answer is not due date at all.  Due date should be sacred, reserved only for tasks that really have a drop dead end date.

More important, but different is what I call the "Do Date".  When are you actually going to do the task?  If it is big, when are you going to do part of it?

If the do date slips and it gets closer to the due date guess what?  You have less and less time to "do" - you better watch what else you have on and what meetings you are accepting.
