Time management? You cannot manage time. Priority management? First you must have priorities other than the never ending “urgent”. “I'm too busy” Try these tips, go on this course, read this book - they might help. “I don't have time, because I’m too busy” Everyone has the same amount of time so why can one person do this (task, project, job) and another cannot? Because you are a failure? Because you are a loser? Because you are destined to never progress? No, because you are either not efficient or because you are not effective: Effective at dropping the shit that does not need to be done. Effective at ruthlessly avoiding interruptions. Effective at consistently focusing on the main things that will drive your project, your career, your life forward. Efficient at doing a task as fast as it can be done. Efficient at using technology to save time. Efficient at using other people's time and other people's money. You don't have time to work on yourself? There is a cost to everything you do and everything you do not do. The cost of not consistently working on yourself is your life. Is it worth it, just so you can say you were too busy? What would you do with and extra hour per day? In no particular order:

What would you do with and extra hour per day? Imagine being interviewed after already being "successful" and being asked the question, "was it hard?" Well no... And yes Hard is relative and people want to believe that no one else can do what they can do. But building up habits one by one are easy to do. So, in that regard, building the habits necessary for success should be easy. If you told someone that all you have to do is work on yourself for 10 years and then you might have guts to do what you already know you need to do, then is that easy or hard? If you start from near the end, then it is relatively easy. But it is still hard to stop procrastinating, still hard to manage third parties, still hard to get the money to do it. But it is not as hard as being on the front line in a war zone, it is not as hard as physics A-level, it is not as hard as talking to girls if you are shy. It is not easy or hard, it is just a journey. From wherever you are starting there will be hardships. If you come from a poor background and lived on the streets before becoming a millionaire then the media will love the rags to riches tale. What if you were middle class, got "trapped" in a corporate job and then made a million in a side project? But which is harder? Having the drive and benefit of nothing to lose. Or notching up a gear after coasting through life and having a privileged lifestyle that you don't want to lose? Which is riskier? Which is harder? Either one provides lots of excuses not to try, lots of excuses to quit along the way. Is it hard? The only answer should be, "does it matter? Do it anyway." Do it badly if you need to, but do it anyway. And do it every day. Fed up of meeting hell? Our iPhone app can help. Find out more.
What would you do with and extra hour per day? What comes first?
Whatever it is, put that first. Is your priority spending extra time this weekend to get one more report done for the boss, to send one more important email, to finish one more task? Is this a priority over finding a life partner, over being healthy and free from illness, over having financial freedom to do what you love? You are not going to get fired. Prioritise your life (not just your to-do list) else the cost is your life – is it worth it? P.S. If you do get fired, great! You have just freed up some time to reprioritise! I was watching Eden earlier this year.
The TV show features 23 participants living for a year in a remote part of Scotland, attempting to build a self-sufficient community. It includes people who have regular 21st century jobs. It turns out that a life coach is not that useful when you just need to chop wood and make fire. You do not need an accountant or a lawyer when there is no currency or laws. This should be freeing not scary. When our jobs are taken over by AI, we should not be fearing the apocalypse. Instead deciding what we will do when we do not have to work. Manual labour has already vanished for humans and we have already adapted. Rule based professions will also soon disappear. There is much less nuance in your job than you realise. Decide what you would do if there were no need to work. Hint: you can make a living doing that right now. What's important in life?
Why are you working? Why do you have an expensive car and house? Why are you saving a lot of money? Why are you investing? Why do you want to run your own business? If you don't know the goal, then you are unlikely to reach it. If you don't know how to even set your goal, then read a book. Get some inspiration. Watching the Olympics last year, it struck me how many people stumble in life after achieving so much. Be it booze or drugs or destructive relationships. Imagine if you had already accomplished all your dreams at an early age. What else do you want? What is success to you? Try to remember that happiness is independent of material success not because of it. |
