The risk to your job when AI takes over?

3/1/2017

I was watching Eden earlier this year.

The TV show features 23 participants living for a year in a remote part of Scotland, attempting to build a self-sufficient community.  It includes people who have regular 21st century jobs.  It turns out that a life coach is not that useful when you just need to chop wood and make fire. You do not need an accountant or a lawyer when there is no currency or laws.

This should be freeing not scary. When our jobs are taken over by AI, we should not be fearing the apocalypse. Instead deciding what we will do when we do not have to work.

Manual labour has already vanished for humans and we have already adapted. Rule based professions will also soon disappear.  There is much less nuance in your job than you realise.

Decide what you would do if there were no need to work. Hint: you can make a living doing that right now.
